I have been working with wood my entire life. As a child, I helped my father refinish antique furniture. Early on, I developed an appreciation for the beauty of wood. As I grew older, I took on my own projects and refined my skills. I purchased my first lathe in 1986 from a pawn shop in San Antonio, TX. It wasn’t until 2004 when I purchased a “proper” lathe, did my real wood-turning journey began.
Fast-forward to 2023.
I balance my time between traditional turning and ornamental turning lathes, as well as everything in between. As most are familiar with traditional turning, ornamental turning might be a bit difficult to comprehend. Ornamental turning can be described as a complex turning involving a rotary or fixed tool addressing a piece of wood in a set or rocking position. I own 2 types of ornamental lathes. The first is a Lindow Rose Engine which has a rocking headstock. The second is a Holtzapffel lathe that has a fixed headstock. I see traditional turning as a marriage between a beautiful piece of wood and a pleasing shape. Ornamental turning can take an average piece of wood and make it beautiful. When these two disciplines are combined, the creative opportunities are endless.
